Russia was always known for its vodka, and the lager beer became well known to the country only in the 20th century. Since then, breweries were set up in the country for manufacturing the beer at home. However, the country soon enhanced its production capacity and is now one of the top-most countries exporting large amounts of lager beer.
The Kvass
Kvass was one of the alcoholic drinks popular in Russia during the medieval period. It was also an ingredient for dishes, including tyurya, okroshka, and botvinya. This drink resembles modern Russian Beer, which was available in the country for the last ten centuries but became more popular during 1682 to the year 1725. The Kvass preparation was a fermentation of the rye bread, and also included fruits (including berries), raisins, and herbs. While it resembled lager beer, it was sweeter. This drink had a low percentage of alcohol. It is still served in the country and is preferred by millions.
Russian Beer in modern times
Also known as Pivo, the modern form of Russian Beer started to become popular in Russia during the 1990s. Beer facts in Russia reveal that the first lager beer-producing factory in Russia was Baltika Breweries. Now there are many more players in the field, including Tinkoff Brewery.
Craft Beer
Craft beer production was started in Russia by Tinkoff Brewery. The company started as a pub and was situated in St. Petersburg, where it made its beers. Tinkoff Brewery does not sell any bottled beer now, as the company was bought by InBev, another brewer. Still, the Tinkoff brewpubs are making craft beer quite popular in the country.
Today, Russia is the 4th largest beer market in the whole world. The market of beers, including craft beer, is also increasing, as they offer many flavors and tastes, and are readily available.
